For many years, automotive service and repair shops have indirectly or directly sent their wastes into the water supply through floor drains and/or run off from their operations that are connected to wells or storm drains. These wastes include petroleum products, degreasing solvents, car wash water, metals, battery electrolytes, paints, thinners and many others.

New Assigned Protection Factors (APFs) for respiratory protection programs are being incorporated into the OSHA (U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration) respiratory protection standard. This APF final rule completes the revision of the reserve sections of OSHA's Respiratory Protection Standard as published in 1998. The Respiratory Protection Standard will now contain provisions necessary for a comprehensive respiratory protection program, including selection and use of respirators, training, medical evaluation, and fit testing.

Oct. 2006

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has issued safety and health guidance to help small businesses comply with the Agency's new hexavalent chromium(Cr(VI)) standard. The guidance document includes requirements for general industry (including automotive refinishing facilities), as well as construction and shipyards.
